Derek Westbrook

Producer, Engineer, Pedal Steel & Guitar Player

About

Derek is a Texas-based producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges the gap between technical precision and creative soul. Currently a partner at YellowDog Studios in San Marcos, Texas, he has spent over seven years shaping sounds for a diverse roster of independent and established talent such as Silverada (formerly Mike and the Moonpies), Austin Haynes, Sam Ehrnstein, Emma Zeck, Nancy Manet, Jesse Stratton, Dillon Cassidy, and Cooper Hamilton. His versatility is further highlighted by his work with contemporary Carnatic vocalist Sindhu Vasudevan, as well as artists like Remi Mae, Dallas Burrow, Jade Marie Patek, Season Ammons, Nick Moceri, and Dale Yarborough.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Business/Management, Derek developed a sophisticated understanding of the industry's evolving landscape through his involvement with the Harvard Law School Recording Artist Project, the M.I.T. Open Music Initiative, the renowned Berklee Indian Ensemble, and Primary Wave Music.

Beyond the glass of the control room, Derek is a highly sought-after session and touring musician. Specializing on pedal steel and guitar, he has performed with a multitude of artists, including Remi Mae, The Roughstock, Eric Bowden, Southwest Son, Clayton Chapin, Foster & Quinn, Mike Neumann, and the Talbott Brothers. He is currently the touring pedal steel player for Gunnar Latham.

Whether behind a console or on a stage, Derek remains dedicated to the craft of storytelling through sound, blending Red Dirt influences with a modern, global perspective.
